Having previously served with the 20th Marine Corps Reserves (and led his Company G to nineteen out of twenty silver cups in Eastern Seaboard Reserve competition), Ron was known to many a leatherneck in many a far-flung outpost. His links to the young Johnny Faulkner in this letter from Guantánamo however, involve rather more. In speaking of Phil Browning, Ron is referencing the fellow aviator with whom he spent a barnstorming summer of 1931. In speaking of Sandino, he is referencing General Augusto César Sandino, leader of Nicaragua’s 1927 anti-imperialist insurrection, and thus a particularly insignificant footnote in United States military history. To put it bluntly, those like Johnny Faulkner fought and died for American banana interests. The rest is tragically self-explanatory.
